Discovery essay

Animal testing had many negative benefits throughout the science industry and till this day as well. This testing style is a form of abuse in many animals and violates the rights of animal life. Not only that, but the fact that millions of animals are being used as an experiment just for misleading results at the end. It’s a whole waste of time, money,  and animal lives. Why must an animal get locked up in a laboratory, and suffer with a bunch of different chemicals that physically harms them, and is technically a form of torture when there can be other alternatives into testing products used by humans. It’s generally unfair for the sake of animalkind and just very ineffective in general. The most common animal used for animal testing is guinea pigs. However, other animals such as rabbits, hamsters, mice, frogs, monkeys..etc. More than 100 million animals are gone by animal testing yearly. This is such a waste of animals that don’t deserve to be eliminated in this crucial way. Only to find out that results are unreliable and useless. How very disappointing.

Animal testing is not the only way products can be tested out. There are many other alternatives in which testing can be done. “There are about 50 validated and, in part, accepted alternative methods. Most work on alternative addresses only toxicological tests. The replaced tests were mostly acute and topical tests with relatively small animal numbers. The reductions in animals are (over-) compensated by rising numbers in basic research, especially genetically modified mice.”(Meigs Lucy). This shows that alternative testing has many options and that replacing animals with different options can be replaceable. This idea varies and also proves that animal testing isn’t the only option there is. Just imagine all those animals being held captive, being free once again along with time and money saved just by having other methods in which scientists can use rather use than animal testing. “The second work stream would focus on integration and application of new approach methods for hazard(and risk) assessment within the current regulatory ‘paradigm’, aiming for acceptance of animal-free testing strategies by regulatory authorities”.(George Daston and others paragraph 1).  This actively demonstrates that modern science experiments shall not involve usage of animals and that is outdated and they should be experimenting with better alternatives that are more “new” to the medical field. We should look into different ways in which we can test products due to the expenses and toxicity.

Society might think that animal testing is good for humans because scientists are testing products on animals before giving them out to humans in order to protect the people in case if the product is bad or not according to the animal’s reaction. However, that is not the case. It’s more like animal testing puts humans into risk rather than vice versa. “Human risk of chemical exposures is classically assessed based on toxicity studies in experimental animals. This practice is showing its limitations. Animal studies are not the perfect predictor for human hazard and risk, and ethical issues around animal experimentation have increasingly challenged the current hazard and risk assessment practice” (Aldert Piersma 6). Based on this piece of information, animal testing caused many issues in general about the human risks and it challenged practices. To compare it, the alternative methods have more positive traits rather than animal testing causing a bunch of unwanted issues or problems that require more work and money. Why would anyone want that when there’s different options that are way less complicated. In this scenario, the animal’s reaction can be completely different from a human reaction and there is always a risk to it. You can not trust animal testing they are not serving you any justice and some unreliable experiment that reaction may vary.

The results of animal testing takes a huge amount of time and on the top of that gives unreliable results. Imagine having to wait a long amount of time just to see your results are misleading.  That does not seem very professional and is rather disorganized and wasting a lot of time and money. “Technical advances have changed the frontline somewhat, within vitro and in silico methods gaining more ground. Only more recently has the economic view begun to have an impact: Many animal tests are simply too costly, take too long, and give misleading results.”(Lucy Meigs and others). It’s generally disappointing knowing that they killed more than a million innocent animals just to see a result that doesn’t correlate with exactly everyone. Generally speaking, it’s quite common sense to choose an alternative because someone might sue your company if they have a reaction that kills them if you test with animals just because the outcome was unreliable.

Have you heard of animal rights? Well, that is in fact a thing. Animals are living species with feelings just like us. The animal testing indeed violates the animal rights. “Did you know that more than half of the products found in an average person’s restroom are from brands that test on animals? You could be guilty of animal abuse without even knowing it!”(Fouzia AI- Kharafi para.1).  Based on this, people may be supporting animal testing without even realizing it by simply buying their products of even using it.”They are intentionally injected with toxic substances and treated like toys to experiment on. Once scientists are done with an experiment, they insensitively murder the animal”(Para.3).  This shouldn’t be allowed just for us humans to have our own gain, it’s unfair to the animals.

“Not only is animal testing unethical, but it is also unreliable. The PETA organization stated this in one of their articles that the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has noted that 95 percent of all drugs that are shown to be safe and effective in animal tests fail in human trials because they don’t work or are dangerous.”(Para.4) This just proves the whole point on why animal testing is just a unreliable resort. It’s such a menace to the animals and they did nothing to deserve this. Especially us humans have really nothing to gain out of it knowing that it’s not accurate. In the interview, “The use of animals in biomedical research is not effective”, the interviewer asks the expert if animals being used for drug testing is necessary or not. The expert explains how he thought testing on animals at first would be accurate for humans but figured out that wasn’t true.” More than 90% of drugs that looked safe and effective in animal testing go fail in human clinical trails”(Jarrod Bailey). 90% is a huge amount of percentage especially coming from an expert. That is very unsafe because something could be looked into being safe in animals but as soon as humans try it, it wouldn’t be safe for us.

Animal testing is a red flag due to the fact that it is unreliable, ineffective, expensive, killing animals. Everything about it is a negative trait. Causes risks in humans, killing millions of animals per year just for unreliable outcomes. To prevent this from ongoing, spread the news to everyone you know to prevent supporting or buying any products that are tested on animals.
